Über Nataal
Nataal ist ein herausragend gut kuratiertes Internet-Portal für zeitgenössische afrikanische und afro-inspirierte Styletrends in Fotografie, Visual Arts, Mode, Film und Musik. Die Gründer von Nataal, Mode-Journalistin Helen Jennings und der Filmemacher Alassane Sy, haben dazu in den vergangenen Jahren ausgesuchte Arbeiten von Künstlern, Kreativen, Designern in und außerhalb Afrikas auf Nataal zusammengetragen. Heute folgen Designinteressierte und Modebewusste weltweit dem Portal.
Für den Auftakt unserer Veranstaltungsreihe »More Aphrike« kommen Helen Jennings, Melody Micmacher aus London nach Hamburg und stellen uns Nataal und den Film »Marabout« vor. Nataal-Gründer und Macher der Fims, Alassane Sy, schaltet sich aus Dakar via Skype dazu.

Helen Jennings
Helen Jennings ist eine Mode- und Kulturjournalistin aus London. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit für Nataal arbeitet sie regelmäßig für Titel wie Dazed&Confused, El Pais, The Face, Grazia, Guardian, Harper‘s Bazaar, iD, Sunday Times und Trace. Helen war fünf Jahre lang Redakteurin von Arise – einem Magazin für afrikanische Mode und Kultur. Darüberhinaus ist sie Autorin des Buchs New African Fashion, das im Prestel Verlag erschienen ist.

Alassane Sy
Sy wurde in Mauretanien geboren. Nach Flucht in den Senegal und Schulzeit in Frankreich kam er nach New York, um Schauspieler zu werden. Dort arbeitete er erfolgreich als Model für Marken wie Boss und spielte später in etlichen Filmen mit – darunter die Hauptrolle in Restless City, der beim Sundance Film Festival gezeigt wurde. Inzwischen dreht Sy auch eigene Filme. Im Jahr 2014 gründete er Nataal. Sy wohnt in London.
Melody Micmacher
Melody Micmacher wurde in Paris geboren. Für ihr Studium am Central Saint Martins zog sie nach London und war als Assistentin für den Filmemacher Ruth Hogben tätig. Inzwischen arbeitet Micmacher im Bereich Produktion für Filme, Musikvideos und Werbekampagnen. Zu ihren Kunden zählt sie Ted Baker, Island Records und LOVE Magazine. Kürzlich arbeitete sie als Produktionsmanagerin für Alassane Sys aktuelles Kurzfilmprojekt, ein Pilotfilm zu seinem nächsten Spielfilm Talibès.

»Joburg-based photographer and filmmaker Kristin-Lee Moolman explores the idea of creating a fictional mythology or place based on the synthesis of political, personal and visual experiences of living in South Africa. She is taking her heritage and her friends’ heritage, and turning them into a new world and view of beauty beyond the racial struggles of the country. She calls it >bubble gum pop with hint of black magic<.«

Helen Jennings: »African fashion offers the world something truly fresh.«
Is there such a thing as African fashion?
There is no one overarching idea of African fashion of course. There is fashion from Africa and inspired by Africa and it goes without saying that the continent’s centuries-old sartorial flair and current scenes can not be glibly described. It’s important to dispels clichés about African fashion being summed up by a handful of signifiers - wax print, big beads etc. The best talents coming through now balance global seasonal trends with local textiles, dress practices and traditions, thereby offering the world something that feels truly fresh. Each of the major cities have their own burgeoning scenes and names to know and those connect to what’s happening in neighbouring countries and in the diaspora as interest in ‘African fashion’ rapidly unfolds. Right now Nigeria and South Africa certainly dominate but there’s lovely things happening in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal and beyond.

Marabout erzählt die Geschichte von Polizist Diagne, der in Dakar eine Bande von vermeintlichen Straßenjungs verfolgt. Je mehr er in ihr Leben vordringt, desto mehr kommen die Gefahren ihres Alltags zum Vorschein.
