Karl Hector and the Malcouns celebrate Afrofunk like no other band. Years ago, as Poets of Rhythm, they paved the way for labels such as Daptone, Truth & Soul, and Timmion, introducing their distinctive raw sound. Based in Munich, the group around Marja Burchard, daughter of Christian Burchard — the legendary co-founder of Embryo — once visited M.Bassy for a jam night.

“We draw inspiration from funk and psychedelic fusions from Southwest Asia and North Africa, as well as from various global records for sound and phrasing,” Whitefield explains. “We’re trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk.”
