26.10.2019, 19.00 – Decolision #3 with Onejiru & Mable Preach

Photography by Matthias Arfmann

In the musical series »Decolision« we encounter artists who cross the boundaries between disciplines and invite you to change your perspective.

Our guests for Decolision #3 are Hamburg-based musician and activist Onejiru, as well as director and curator Mable Preach. Both invigorate Hamburg’s cultural scene with new event formats and non-institutional »collectives«. We look forward to a dialogue on collectivism and activism in the realm of artistic practice.

About Onejiru

Onejiru is a musician, founder and activist. Born in Nairobi, the singer-songwriter grew up in Wanne-Eickel and has been living in Hamburg for many years. Not only did she tour in Europe, USA, Russia and East Africa and sang on various albums, but she has also been part of the artist collective Turtle Bay Country Club that is run by Hamburg-based music producer and manager Matthias Arfmann for many years.

In Addition to her career as a musician, she is socially involved in the advisory board of the Viva con Agua Foundation and the Afro-German artist collective »Sisters« founded by her. »Sisters« is a powerful force of women who have come together to engage politically and socially on issues such as gender, racism, education and environmental policy. She is also a spokesperson of Music Hamburg Women, a network for women in the music industry.

Onejiru is a singer and producer in Ballet Jeunesse’s team, who recompose classical music to engage and attract a younger audience. Together with Symphoniker Hamburg, Ballet Jeunesse opened the Reeperbahn Festival in 2016 and in the same year was nominated for the HANS Music Prize in the category »Album of the Year« and »Outstanding Production«. In October 2018 ARTE aired the documentary »Ballet Jeunesse – Von Ballet, Beats und Regelbrechern« and a concert with the NDR Radiophilharmonie. The album »Ballet Jeunesse« was released on the Decca label in 13 countries.

Onejiru is the initiator of »eeden«, a co-creation space for visionary women. Her second solo album “Higher than High” has just been released.
