With the Critical Whiteness-Workshop »Unlearning Silence: Spaces of Solidaraity«, led by Anna von Rath, M.Bassy aims to promote democratic values such as equality, civil courage, and solidarity, and to encourage workshop participants to actively engage in democratic processes. The workshop addresses a white audience inviting participants to reflect on critical whiteness and white privilege—both individually and collectively—and to take responsibility for building sustainable alliances and developing joint strategies for action (power-sharing processes). At M.Bassy, we create an intimate and safe space for 17 allies to engage in a critical and holistic examination of racism, othering, hierarchical power structures, and civil values.
The current social situation here in Germany is marked by increasing polarization, rising racism and sexism, and right-wing populist discourses that increasingly challenge democratic values such as equality, diversity, and inclusion. At the same time, many white people lack awareness of power structures, privileges, and experiences of discrimination, as well as a concrete space to reflect on their own positioning in order to strengthen their individual and collective capacity for dialogue, perspective-change, alliance-building, and practices of solidarity—all of which need to be applied to the participants’ everyday lives.
Anna von Rath
Anna von Rath (b. 1988) lives in Berlin, where she works in the fields of social justice, diversity, and inclusion. She is a co-founder of poco.lit., an online platform for postcolonial literature in the broadest sense. She has taught at the University of Potsdam and earned her Ph.D. there. Her publications focus on Afropolitism, ecocriticism, and German colonial history. In addition to writing, she has curated and coordinated numerous projects, such as an audio guide for postcolonial city tours of Potsdam and the web app macht.sprache. for politically sensitive translation. She lives and works in Berlin.
