Kopano Maroga (b. 1994 in Benoni, South Africa) is a performance artist, writer, cultural worker and co-founder of the arts organization ABZ - ANY BODY ZINE. Kopano has worked with the award-winning contemporary dance company »Underground Dance Theatre« and with dance choreographers Alan Parker, Celeste Botha, Kristina Johnstone, and Jan Wallyn, as well as with theater maker Neil Coppen. Kopano was awarded the kykNet Fiesta Award, among others, for the performance in Coppen's award-winning play »Buiteland/Newfoundland«. Kopano currently lives in Brussels, Belgium and works as a curator and guest dramaturg at Kunstencentrum Vooruit in Ghent, Belgium. Kopano operates at the intersection of art, social justice, and healing knowledge systems with an interest in destabilizing rigid identity theories and a belief in the power of love as a "weapon of mass construction." Kopano's debut poetry collection »Jesus Thesis and Other Critical Fabulations« was published by uHlanga in South Africa in 2020 and will be publicized in German by akono publishers, Leipzig in September 2023. On this occasion, we welcome Kopano at M.Bassy with a performative readinng.
